privacy policy

This policy covers the hiked app and the hiked.ch website. Last updated: July 2026.

1. Who we are

hiked, c/o Impact Hub Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland — hello@hiked.ch. We process personal data in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU GDPR.

2. Data we collect in the app

Account data: name or username, email address, and your profile information.
Preferences: your answers to the hiking quiz, saved trails and app language, used to personalise trail suggestions.
Location data: your GPS position is used to verify check-ins at trailheads, to show trails near you, and to estimate travel times from your home town. Location is requested when you use these features — we do not sell location data.
Activity data: hikes you save, plan, join or complete; points and leaderboard positions.
Social data: hikers you follow, groups you join, and content you post (hike descriptions, messages).
Device data: basic technical information (device type, OS version, crash logs) to keep the app running.

3. Data we collect on the website

Contact form (name, email, message) to answer your enquiry; newsletter email address for the newsletter only; technical server logs by our hosting provider for security and stability.

4. How we use your data

To provide the service: matching you with hikes, enabling group planning, verifying check-ins, running leaderboards. To improve the app based on usage and feedback. To communicate with you about hikes you joined, your account, or support requests. We do not sell your personal data and we do not show third-party advertising.

5. What other users can see

Your profile, the public hikes you host, and — if you participate — your position on leaderboards (friends, canton, Switzerland) are visible to other users. Private hikes are visible only to people you invite. You can use the app without joining leaderboards.

6. Sharing with third parties

We share data only with: technical service providers (hosting, analytics, crash reporting) bound by data processing agreements; tour partners (e.g. Zürcher Wanderwege) when you book one of their guided tours — they receive the details needed to run your booking; authorities where legally required. Map data is provided via swisstopo and Mapbox services. When maps load, technical requests (e.g. your IP address and the requested map tiles) are transmitted to these providers; Mapbox processes this data in accordance with its own privacy policy.

7. Storage and security

Data is stored on servers in Switzerland or the EU and protected with industry-standard measures. We keep data only as long as needed for the purposes above or as legally required.

8. Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and object to processing. Contact hello@hiked.ch — we respond within 30 days.

9. Deleting your account

You can delete your account directly in the app: Profile → Settings → Delete account. This removes your account and personal data; see the support page for details. If you can't access the app, email support@hiked.ch and we'll delete it for you.

10. Children

hiked is not directed at children under 13. Minors should use the app with the consent and involvement of a parent or guardian — especially when joining hikes.

11. Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves. The current version is always available at this address.
